FEATURING OUR AMBASSADOR
Meet J’aime Morrison, PhD
We are proud to introduce J’aime Morrison, a creator of embodied experiences specializing in Movement and the Ocean as a healing space, she brings to Hydro Theory an abundance of resources regarding our inner and outer bodies.
J'aime Morrison, Ph.D. is a theatre director, choreographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She is a Professor of Movement at California State University Northridge where she teaches dance, movement and somatic theory, and stages multi-disciplinary experimental productions. She holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from New York University and was a faculty Fulbright Scholar in Movement to Portugal. J’aime has taught Master Classes in Dance and Movement in Lisbon, Shanghai, Dublin, Belfast, London, Los Angeles and New York City. With Mourning Surf, she turns her attention to grief and the body, specifically how grief is expressed physically and how movement is an essential part of the grieving and healing process. For the international organization Hope for Widows, J’aime developed a series of expressive movement workshops offered via Zoom throughout the pandemic and she continues to build on this work by offering movement for grief workshops in collaboration with Camp Widow and TwoCan Retreats as well as private coaching sessions. J’aime is an Associate Member of Women in Film. Upwell is her first film in a planned trilogy related to surfing, gender and dance. Her next film project, “Bodies of Water,” is currently in pre-production.
Her recent short film, UPWELL, composes a visual intersection of body movements to translate her experience with grieving, illustrating the role of both dance and surfing in her journey. In the film, a vision of surfing, embodied by surfer Kassia Meador, appears as in a dream and inspires a woman, Rachel Whiting, to return to the water after a devastating loss. Surrounded by a diverse group of women surfers, she paddles out and they perform a ritual of connection to each other and to the ocean that is a refuge for them all. The film, edited by Ethney McMahon, includes cinematography by Sarah Lee, Theresa Hoey and Lucia Griggi and features an original score by composer Karam Salem.
